SOUTH ASIAN AND INDIAN WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
South Asian and Indian weddings are all about movement. From the first beat of the music to the last song of the night, these weddings are truly dancing all day long. As a Chicago South Asian wedding photographer, I focus on capturing that nonstop energy — the dancing, the reactions, and the emotions that come with it.Dance isn’t just entertainment at South Asian weddings. It’s how families celebrate, connect, and express joy. Every event has its own rhythm, and my goal is to document it naturally, without interrupting the flow.
SANGEET : WHERE THE DANCING BEGINS
The sangeet ceremony is where everything really starts. Held one or two days before the wedding, the sangeet is packed with choreographed dances, spontaneous performances, and big emotional moments. Families spend weeks preparing routines, and once the music starts, the energy never drops.
This is one of the most important events to photograph because it sets the tone for the entire wedding weekend. The colors, the movement, and the expressions tell the story better than any posed photo ever could.
You can see a full Chicago sangeet we photographed here.
THE BARAAT: DANCING THROUGH THE STREETS
Few moments compare to the baraat. The groom’s entrance is loud, joyful, and completely dance-driven. Family and friends surround him, dancing their way to the ceremony with dhol drums, music, and pure excitement.
Photographing the baraat requires anticipation and experience. These moments happen fast, and the best images come from understanding when the energy peaks and where to be before it happens.
CEREMONY TO RECEPTION: DANCE NEVER STOPS
Even during the ceremony, movement plays a role — from emotional entrances to celebratory exits. Once the reception begins, the dance floor becomes the heart of the night. Parents, siblings, and friends fill the floor, switching between planned performances and spontaneous dancing.
As a Chicago Indian wedding photographer, I stay close to the action, capturing wide energy shots and tight emotional moments — hands in the air, smiles, laughter, and those in-between moments couples love most
Choreographed dances are a huge part of South Asian weddings. They’re personal, fun, and often emotional. What matters just as much as the performance is the reaction — parents watching proudly, guests cheering, couples laughing together.
Those reactions are what turn dance photos into memories.
South Asian weddings don’t slow down — and neither should the photography. From the sangeet to the baraat and straight through the reception, these celebrations are built around dance, movement, and shared joy.
If you’re planning a South Asian or Indian wedding in Chicago and want photography that truly captures the energy of dancing all day long, I’d love to tell your story.
